CUISINE AND ATMOSPHERE: Subs ‘n Such has been holding up shop in the two little yellow buildings along South Florida Avenue in Lakeland since 1977. Walking into Subs ‘n Such is like walking into an old-school, mom-and-pop sandwich shop. The menu features a variety of options, including hot and cold sub sandwiches, Cubans, burgers, wraps, hot dogs and salads. The original Dixieland location features a small inside eating area with bar stools along the windows. The South Lakeland location has only outdoor seating.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: Sub ‘n Such has a large menu, so it can take some time to figure out what to get. I asked one of the staff which is the most popular sandwich, and he recommended the Italian sub. It was very tasty, topped with sweet peppers, Italian dressing, mustard, mayo, pickles on Cuban bread. I also tried the Cuban, served hot and pressed with ham, pork, Swiss cheese, pickles, lettuce, mayo and mustard. The bread was a little tough, but it was very filling. My only caveat is the interior of the Dixieland location can feel cramped if you choose to eat inside, and outside isn't better because you're a couple of feet from the ever-busy South Florida Avenue.
PRICE RANGE: $3.29-$8.59.
