The newest kid on the retirement homes block is the active adult community, also known as age-restricted housing or the 55+ community. Catering to the most independent Baby Boomers, these gated communities offer a range of housing options, home modifications designed to facilitate aging in place and amenities to keep residents engaged and entertained.
More than 1.2 million households are choosing to move to these relatively new “village concepts,” and that number continues to grow, according to a MetLife survey conducted in 2008. Housing options range from apartment complexes or condos to single-family homes, and are usually only available to those 55 and older, although some communities cap the age at 62. Living spaces in these neighborhoods are designed to the specifications of aging residents, such as built-in safety modifications and open floor plans.
What sets these communities apart is the plethora of activities available to residents. Amenities may include a golf course, pool, library, billiards, lounges, fitness facility, salon and barber, theater and on-site banks or pharmacies. Many neighborhoods host weekly gatherings, holiday events, daily social invitations and fitness classes, among other options. Often, these communities are situated in close proximity to shopping centers, restaurants and churches.
