We’re counting down the days until Christmas with a list of Traditions that you may or may not have heard of!
This fourth tradition involves hiding pickles.
An old victorian Christmas story tells of a horrible innkeeper who stuffed two kids into a pickle barrel on Christmas night. St Nicholas happened to stroll by the inn, hear the children’s cries, and released them from the pickled prison. The kids then ran home.
To celebrate this story, a glass pickle is hidden within a Christmas tree on Christmas Eve. In the morning, a child who finds the glass pickles in the tree is given a gift, or allowed to open their presents first.
